Pinewood Derby Car Workshop!

Friday Night at the Junkman’s Ball.
Friday April 17, 5:30-8:00 pm
at the Former Steve and Barry’s in Pepperell Corners, Opelika

Visit with Opelika-Auburn News reporter and columnist Joe McAdory to share your pinewood derby enthusiam and learn more about how to make a fabulous and fast pinewood derby car. Bring your best car and it could end up featured in next week’s Cub Reporter!

It starts as a block of wood and evolves into a child’s personal race car. For years, a variety of youth organizations have used Pinewood Derby events to promote father-son activities and developing craftsmanship. Church and scouting groups hold annual derbies and winners often compete at regional and state levels. Derby cars often race for big prizes, but another aspect of the wooden car’s development is its final appearance and originality. The fastest car isn’t always the best-looking. Creating an attractive car takes as much skill as developing one that crosses the finish line first.

The Junkman's Ball

Q: What Should I Wear to the Ball?
A: Wear something you thought you’d never wear again! A prom or bridesmaid dress. An old suit. An ROTC or old work uniform.  Have fun! Be silly and think RECYCLED! Whatever you wear - just come and have fun!

Q: What are we raising money for?

A: The Giant Yard Sale and The Junkman’s Ball are fundraisers for the Newspapers In Education Program sponsored by the Opelika-Auburn News. NIE is an international program supported by the Newspaper Association of America. To learn more about NIE visit http://www.oacubreporter.com.

Our NIE program provides more than 200,000 newspapers to area schools at the teacher’s request. These papers are used as teaching tools fostering literacy and a knowledge of current and local events. Research shows that kids who read the newspaper become adults who care about their community!

Newspapers in Education (NIE) is a cooperative effort between schools and newspapers to promote the use of newspapers as an educational resource. The Newspaper Association of America Foundation is the administrative organization for more than 950 NIE programs in the United States. The Foundation provides resources and training to newspapers and educators on using newspapers in schools; helps newspapers develop strategic plans for promoting and marketing their NIE services; and represents newspapers with a broad variety of educational partners. (from http://www.naafoundation.org)

The Opelika-Auburn News recently received more than 50 thank-you letters from students in Loachapoka who took the time to express their appreciation for the NIE Program. Following are a few of the comments from these letters. The NIE Program would also like to thank our sponsors Walmart, Auburn Bank, Sam’s Club, Dr. Charles Greenleaf, Dr. Scott Greer, The Jule Collins Smith Museum of Art, and PakMail of Auburn. These businesses support NIE because they know informed and caring students grow into informed and caring aduts. Thank You! You can help sponsor NIE by donating your newspaper vacation suspensions to the Newspapers In Education program.  See you at the BALL!
