How To Make A Newspaper Flower

How to make a Newspaper Zinnia
You need,
newspaper (colorful ads work great), chenille pipe cleaner stems and scissors.

The first thing you have to do is let Mom and Dad finish reading the paper!  When they give you the go-ahead, tear the page in half at the vertical crease (that’s the one that goes up and down).  Now you have half a page. Tear it in half again at the horizontal crease (That’s the one that goes side to side). Now you have a quarter-page.

Take your quarter page and fold in accordion style about an inch deep.  When the whole piece is fold into an accordion shape, fold and cut the strip in half at the very center. Now you have two equal length accordion pieces.  Take one on the pieces and cut a straight line down the center horizontally to the mid section. Turn it over and do the same to the other side.  (You can make more incisions like this if you want more petals in your flower. I usually make three on each side.)

Loosely unfold the accordion with out the horizontal cuts and then gather it back up again between your thumb and fore finger. This is the base of your flower.  Do the same with the next strip, gathering it on top of the base paper.  Pinch them tightly between your fingers and fold a pipe cleaner over the center.  Twist the pipe cleaner very tightly. Now spread and puff the flower up to create your Zinnia.  To make a leaf in your stem simply loop the pipe cleaner and twist.

You can make a whole bouquet for Mom, Grand-mom or your favorite teacher.

Send us pictures if you get an especially beautiful flower.

Cub Reporters Enjoy Garden In The Park

Cub Reporters came out of hibernation last Saturday to celebrate Spring at Opelika’s “Garden in the Park” festival.  James Hickman, 11, filed a Cub Report that he bought a puppet which his brother plays very well. Sam Guyton, 12, said his family bought a piece of Pottery made from mosaic tiles. Maggie Williams’ family loaded up on locally crafted goods including Bird Houses, food and plants.  Maggie reports that she is now inspired to make her own birdhouse.  Kendrie McIntire, 6, said she rode the Rocky Brook Rocket. “It was really fast and I liked riding over the bridges,” said Kendrie in her Cub Report.
