How many days would it take to reach a googol years?
Molly Jenkins, age 7
Dear Molly,
Most of us have heard of Google, the internet search engine but you are asking about Googol, the mathematical term. A googol is 10 to the hundreth power or a one followed by 100 zeros! That’s a very large number.
Hmmm….I wonder if you and the other Cub Reporters can figure it out. Let’s try.
One year is 365 days (if we forget about leap years!) So the question is 365 x 10100=X . There’s actually a really easy answer to this question.
In a Googol years there are 365 Googol Days.
What does it look like numerically?
365,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,
000,000,000,000,000,000
This doesn’t account for leap years. Can you figure out how many extra days would be added by the leap years?
My head is spinning. How about yours?
Now here’s a fun fact. The term Googol was coined by a 9 year-old boy, only two years older then you are now, Molly. He was the nephew of american mathematican Edward Kasner. Stump your parents with this factoid…there are less than googol atoms in the observable universe. (from Wikipedia)
Thanks for your question!

My math teacher talks more than she teaches. So the whole class gets tired of listening to her. Danny falls asleep on his desk. Nicole draws on her math page. Sally dances around the room. I just stare out the window.
Soon something caught my attention-a flying dog! I was amazed!
I ran outside to take a look at the flying dog. But when I came closer to pet it, it wasn’t there. Faster than a blink of an eye it was gone.
I thought I was in a dream but I knew that I wasn’t. I ran home, totally forgetting about my math class, to tell my mom that I saw a flying dog outside, in the school yard. She said that it was only my imagination.
She asked me why I wasn’t in school. I finally noticed that I need to get back to the school as quickly as I could. So I started to run. I was really surprised because my feet were off the ground and I was in the air flying. I looked up and saw the flying dog on the top of me. His paws were holding me in the air. In a zip and a zap I was back in the school, sitting at my desk. Cool! Even my math page was done! I didn’t have to do it! I was really happy.
Tomorrow my family and I are going to our aunt’s house, but I don’t want to go because the ride is really bumpy and not comfortable.
But now I don’t care, all I have to do is ask the flying dog to bring me to my aunt’s house. I think I’ll have a great time.

Camp Marannook is a Christian children’s camp (1st through 9th grades) in Lafayette. I have been going to this camp since the first grade because it is so much fun. You can either go to day camp or overnight camp. They both last a week. After you arrive and get settled into your cabin and meet your counselor, you will take the swim test that let’s you go in the deep end of the pool. The junior Olympic pool features a winding waterslide. I love the activities. This year I got to do archery, cable car, high elements (which is a ropes course at least 15ft. in the air), water gun maze (where the counselors are in a tower in the middle of a tarp maze squirting you with giant water guns while you try to find your way through the maze), channel challenge (an obstacle course over a water channel), and a shaving-cream fight. During Bible time after a delicious breakfast, Mr. Charles (along with Mrs. Barbara, the founders and owners of Camp Marannook for over 30 years) does a Bible Rap about God and the theme of the week. Then the Marannook players will do a short skit from the theme. You will sing Biblical songs. The counselors are trained with 100 hours of Bible studying before we even arrive. I liked my counselor this year because he kept everyone in order and made sure we all had fun and learned about God. On one of the nights of the week, I went on a campout on the big rock by the lake where we ate S’mores and sang campfire songs and slept in a tent. The morning after, you get the BEST breakfast of the week. If you would like to go to Camp Marannook next summer, go check out marannook.org. I can’t wait until next year!!
