“Angels at Rickwood” for a daughter from her dad

by Savanah Stewart, 14

Over the past two years I have enjoyed writing for the Opelika-Auburn newspaper. It has been fun and it has been a great learning opportunity for me.  I hope that I can one day I can be an author or a newspaper writer. I guess you can say I got my writing skills from my dad.  He recently wrote a book called “Angels at Rickwood.” It has just recently been published and he is having his very first book signing on December 12th at 11am at Hastings Book Store in Auburn. My dad wrote this book especially for me for my thirteenth birthday.  It makes me very proud of him for all the work and love he put into this book.

The book is about baseball and the historical Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama. It is also about a girl named Annie and her experience with angels at a baseball game at Rickwood. “Angels at Rickwood” is set in the year of 1992 and is about when Annie visits an elderly woman who tells her old stories from the year of 1931.  This story is an amazing tale.  If you love any kind of sports, children and the mysteries of life I think that you will really enjoy this book. I hope to see you at the book signing!

The Best Christmas

BY JEFFREY NOLEN

How I love Christmas! It is an absolutely beautiful time of the year, which adds to Christmas being my favorite holiday. The festive lights throughout the city and in homes bring a smile to my face as well as the hope and anticipation of Christmas Day, which is a jolly good day.

Oh, I love Christmas! It is a wonderful time of year. I love that we are out of school for two weeks. I can just have fun and just enjoy my presents. I love cool and awesome presents. I get so many presents that it seems like I am famous. I get so much money that it makes me look rich.

Christmas food is so delicious. My family has hot and crisp fried chicken. We have hot and sweet greens. The cornbread is golden and hot. We have crisp apple pie. Christmas food seems especially tasty.

This is a great Christmas memory for me. I hope every Christmas is like that one not only for me but for everybody. This Christmas memory is phenomenal. I don’t know anybody who had a Christmas like that one, and that made me feel special. I know that being with friends and family truly make the holidays bright, but fabulous presents and yummy food are pretty awesome, too!

Christmas

By Xavier Rachel

Christmas is a time of giving,
When Jesus began to start living.
To show that you care,
Be thankful and share.
Christmas is like a day of happiness,
A present could be toy,
Just for a little boy.
Families go out,
Around and about,
Just to see each other,
It could be their grandmother.
Christmas is coming sooner and quicker,
Quicker than ever.
It is not just about what you got,
It is about what you gave.
Christmas is a special time,
It comes straight from the heart.
It is not just about what you gave either,
It is about what you did to make you or someone else feel good.
You should enjoy every Christmas,
Because you made it to see that day.
Christmas is my favorite holiday,
I wish I could have it every day.

All About Christmas

By Nicole Lazure

My favorite holiday around this time is Christmas because of the snow, the lights, and decorations. I know we do not get a lot of snow down here, but we do from where I am.
I love the sparkling snow because I can make snowman and snow forts that turn into imaginary castles or escapes. Snow enhances winter.

Additionally, I love the twinkling lights because they make the season more cheery and get everyone involved in the holiday spirit. The dazzling decorations are very beautiful in snow and with out snow. On Christmas I don’t like to see white lights because it makes it look plain. I love colors on Christmas; it makes it more Christmassy.

On Christmas Eve my family has a tradition. Our tradition is to do grab bags, which is when we all put everybody’s name in a hat. Then, with our eyes closed, we grab a name. We have to get a gift for the person’s name we chose. Then we give and open the presents on Christmas Eve.

On Christmas Day we wake up to a bunch of presents. I love the Christmas food, too: ham with cherries and pineapples – Yum! Yum! Yum! That’s good. I love the food a lot; it seems more special at Christmastime. I love every thing about Christmas. I even love the Christmas shows that ABC Family has been showing. I simply love this time of the year with joy in the air.
