The Perfect Sunset

By Savanah Eve Stewart , 13
I am sitting on the beach barefoot, still wet from my swim in the ocean.  I have just laid my fluffy towel out on the still warm sand.  I am laying here waiting; waiting for the big ball of fire I call the sun to finally leave this part of the earth. The colors in the sky are magnificent.  The dark red, majestic purple and bright orange mix together melting into one another to form a tropical kaleidoscope of color.  It is beautiful and it’s my favorite part of the day. I reach my hand over the towel to feel the soft, warm sand run through my fingers slowly. It is too hard not to love this place. The seagulls are screeching loudly about my head as they make their final catch of fish for the day.  I ignore their squawks by just focusing on the sound of the ocean waves crashing in front of me. The wind is blowing fiercely and I have goose bumps running up and down my damp skin. My long, wet hair whips across my face.  I taste salt on my lips.  It is probably from my swim, or maybe it is the white sand that has blown all over my body. The trees behind me are swerving back and forth as if a giant is shaking them. Like I said before, this is my favorite place. I have lived here for 8 years now and I come out to this exact spot every day at 6:40 p.m. just to see the miraculous sunset.
The sun is about to set. I can tell because the sun is slowly sinking west, and the fiery red color of the sun is dissolving like a lollipop melting from heat. All I can hear now are the waves thundering crashes as they hit the shoreline. The rhythm of the waves is making me sleepy. I notice that the seagull’s shrieks have faded away.  The sun looks like it is drowning in the water. You can only see half of it. It is the most beautiful sight I have seen in my life. It makes no noise as it sinks deeper and deeper.  It reflects off the now silent Atlantic as if it is a mirror. This is the best part. I now can only see the very tip of the sun and it still is slowly sinking. There is now nothing left and the only sounds I can hear are the peaceful sound of evening crickets, the gentle whisper of the wind and the soft ocean waves.  The day is done and the moon will rise soon.  I take that as my cue to leave for the quiet walk back to my home.

The AEEC Trike Ride Fund Raiser

If you don’t read “First grader”
“AEEC had a trike ride. We raised $20,671.32 for our school. We celebrated by having a Family Fun Night. I liked Mrs. Sartain’s Wheel of Fortune game. I also liked the big slide and the lollipop walk. It was fun raising money for our school.” - Matthew Clegg, 6
The funds will be used to purchase classroom and safety supplies. Community support for this effort was incredible and even included donations from as far away as California. The students and teachers at AEEC would like to say THANK YOU to every one who contributed!
