According to The White House Historical Association this is what the President of the United Staes does…He makes sure that citizens obey laws. He is in charge of all armed forces. He makes agreements, called treaties, with other countries. He decides how America will act toward other countries and he represents our country here and around the world. When Congress sends him a new law, he may or may not agree to sign it. He lets Congress know about new laws he thinks should be passed.

This past Saturday, volunteers ranging from young Nicholas Rainey of Alabama 4-H to Sevgi Kucuktas of the International Women for Peace and Understanding came together at the Opelika Wal-Mart parking lot to put on an all-day food drive for the East Alabama Food Bank. Those who joined in this show of community spirit included volunteers from several local clubs and organizations, including Civitan, Kiwanis, and Lions, among others.
While Opelika Public Safety’s Sparky the Fire Dog swayed to the rhythm of the Auburn Junior High School Jazz Band, the Auburn K-9 unit and McGruff the Crime Dog wagged their tails in approval as donors brought in hundreds of pounds of canned food, rice, peanut butter, mac and cheese, and other non-perishable food items. “It was a great event,” said Martha Faupel, director of the Food Bank.
The clear blue skies and cool fall breeze were Mother Nature’s contribution to the event sponsored by the Opelika-Auburn News, WRBL News 3, and Opelika Wal-Mart.
The food drive aimed to fill ten large cardboard containers (like the ones that hold melons at grocery stores) to feed the needy and hungry in Lee County. “We filled those ten and then some,” said Faupel. “We collected 8,791 pounds, or about 5,861 meals. It’s a pretty significant amount”
The food drive was part of the Auburn University Student Government Association’s
Beat Bama Food drive, which ends November 20. For more information on how to donate or get involved with the East Alabama Food Bank, feel free to call
