Q and A with Mayor Hamm

How was Auburn different when you were a child?
Auburn was much smaller and Auburn University was smaller with fewer students.  There were also fewer restaurants and stores, and especially not as many recreational opportunities.

What was your favorite thing to do on Saturdays when you were growing up?
There was always a Saturday movie.  You could get in to the movie theatre with 3 Royal Crown Cola bottle caps, so a large group of friends would go together.  This was when there was no AU game (football or basketball) going on because we would sell cokes & programs at all AU home games.

What is your favorite thing to do now on a Saturday afternoon?
AU sporting events, community events in the City, being with family & friends, and playing golf.

What was your favorite book as a boy?
Old Yeller

Do you think kids today could still relate to it and why?
Yes.  Through all the changes in our society, the love and companionship between a child and a dog (or other pet) is just as important now as ever.

My Trip to City Hall

By Austin Ryan, 7, Auburn

On Monday, October 6 we were out of school. I went with my Mom to visit Mayor Bill Ham, the Mayor of Auburn, Alabama.  He was very nice. He showed me lots of cool things in his office. He has a baseball bat with his name on it and Auburn’s name on it.  He has pictures of himself and the President and Vice-President of the United States. He has a picture of a F-16 plane named after Auburn.

I asked Mayor Ham what he liked most about being Mayor. He said he likes bringing new companies to Auburn. He has been Mayor for 11 years. Before that he was on the City Council for 12 years.  He is elected as Mayor by the people of Auburn voting for him.

Mayor Ham showed us the basement of City Hall that has all the computers in it. The computers are big and help to run the City.  He took some pictures with me and then walked us out.  We told him thank you for seeing us and talking to us.

Mayor Ham is a nice person. I think he is a good Mayor because he cares for Auburn a lot.  I am glad I got to meet Mayor Ham.
