Alabama’s basketball team will try for the A&M sweep tonight.

After wins over Florida A&M and Alabama A&M, Big 12 Conference member Texas A&M visits Coleman Coliseum for a 7 p.m. tipoff.

Alabama (5-2) has won four straight, including a 61-44 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette last Sunday.

The Aggies (6-1) are coming off a 67-66 victory over Arizona.

Today isn’t just about basketball for Mark Gottfried’s program. Seniors Alonzo Gee and Brandon Hollinger will graduate today, earning degrees in three and a half years.

“I am really proud of them,” Gottfried said on Wednesday. “It is a big week for us academically, with final exams going on.”

The Aggies’ lone loss was to Tulsa. Josh Carter leads the team, averaging just under 14 points per game. Point guard Donald Sloan averages 12 points a game and tough inside player Bryan Davis averages just under 12 points and grabs six rebounds per game.

Gottfried said the Aggies are a good preview for what the Crimson Tide will see in SEC play next month.

“This is a team, physically, that is going to be a lot like the teams we are going to see in our league,” the coach said. “Size, speed, and quickness are going to be similar.”

Gottfried said Carter “may be one of the best small forwards in the country.”

Last season, Sloan scored 15 points to lead the Aggies’ 76-63 victory in College Station, Texas. A&M outrebounded Alabama 38-30 and shot 52 percent from the field.

Gee scored 19 points, as did Richard Hendrix, to lead Alabama. Gottfried doesn’t see much carry-over.

“We are a different team. The guys that are playing the bulk of the minutes this year weren’t playing as much last year,” he said.

His newcomers continue to progress.

Ronald Steele leads the team in scoring with 13.7 points per game. Senario Hillman is next at 12.6. Gee averages more than 11 points and almost seven rebounds per game. Freshman standout JaMychal Green leads the team in rebounding (7.4 rpg) and averages 7.6 points.

“We are just trying to get the right rotation,” Gottfried said. “One guy who has had his minutes go up consistently is Andrew Steele. He is doing such a good job defensively that it is hard to take him out sometimes. ...

“Another guy has been Yamene Coleman. Defensively and rebounding were the two areas I thought he was doing such a good job in so his minutes, obviously, went up.”

Coleman, a 6-10 forward, had 5 points and 11 rebounds in a career-high 33 minutes against Louisiana.

Alabama’s eight-game homestand continues next week with a 7 p.m. Wednesday game against Tennessee State.
