AU BASEBALL: 2 more Tigers selected in MLB Draft

Two more Tigers heard their names called Wednesday on the Major League Baseball Draft’s final day.

Speedy outfielder Justin Fradejas went to the Colorado Rockies in the 35th round (1,070th overall) while pitcher Stephen Kohlscheen was selected in the 45th round (1,362nd overall) by the Seattle Mariners. Both players have one year of eligibility remaining and can return to Auburn for 2011 if they pass on their respective professional options.

The pair gave Auburn a final total of 11 draftees from its 2009 roster —more than 33 percent of the players who saw the field at any point during the season. Auburn tied UCLA for having the most players selected this year and also tied the SEC all-time record, which was set last year by both Ole Miss and Georgia.

Fradejas transferred from Northwest Florida State Community College and started the first game of the season, which was eventually marred by an injury. He returned sooner than expected from a broken bone in his hand and immediately started hitting, mixing in a 27-game hitting streak en route to a .358 batting average.

He led the Tigers with 14 stolen bases and was Auburn’s best hitter in the past weekend’s NCAA Regional, where he batted .450 with eight runs and seven RBI.

Kohlscheen, a 6-foot-6 right-hander made 17 appearances, including two starts. He often struggled with his command, though he did retire 11 of the first 15 batters he faced in relief appearances. He finished the season 1-0 with a 6.49 earned run average.

While Fradejas had not been drafted before Wednesday, Kohlscheen has now been selected three times. The Florida Marlins selected him in the 43rd round in 2007 (No. 1,281 overall) and the Philadelphia Phillies took him in the 30th round (No. 917) in 2009.

Signee Bryce Lane, a former Gulf Coast Community College outfielder, was selected in the 41st round by the Houston Astros, making him the the fifth Auburn signee to be drafted.
