TROY — The hits and runs didn’t come Wednesday for Auburn like they did Tuesday, but they were still plentiful.
The Tigers got 16 hits, leading to a 13-8 win over Troy at Riddle-Pace Field. Auburn (27-19) swept the two-game mini-series after winning, 26-6, at Plainsman Park in Auburn Tuesday.
Six Auburn pitchers combined on an unorthodox 4-hitter. The Tigers walked nine Trojans (25-18) and hit five more.
“Somehow we dodged a few bullets in a few innings,” AU head coach John Pawlowski said. “The biggest difference was that we scored some run with two outs. That gives you a lot of momentum.
The teams were tied at 5-all when Auburn broke through with an 8-run fifth inning against three Troy pitchers. Starter Steven Morelock (0-1), who had pitched just three innings all year, was trying to give the Trojans a midweek spark, but was tagged for eight hits and seven runs (six earned). Relievers Drew Hull (1/3 inning, three earned runs) and Josh Storm (1 2/3 innings, six hits, three earned runs) didn’t fare well, either.
All three pitched in the big inning. The big Auburn hits in the fifth inning came on two-run singles from No. 9 hitter Wes Gilmer and Hunter Morris and the Tigers led 13-5.
The Trojans had battled back with four runs in the bottom of the fourth off just one hit — an infield RBI single from Chad Watson — to tie the game.
Troy made things interesting late in the eighth. With the score still 13-5, Ryan Ditthardt drove in a run with a double and two runs scored when Daniel Peterson reached on an error — all off Auburn reliever Chris O’Neil, but with two outs and the bases loaded, Pawlowski brought in closer Austin Hubbard.
Hubbard retired cleanup hitter Brett Henry on a fielder’s choice, and the score stayed 13-8. He pitched around a walk in the ninth, but didn’t get credit for the save. Michael Hurst (4-0), the fourth pitcher, got the win.
“College baseball is a game where you never feel like any lead is safe nor do you ever feel like you’re out of the ball game,” Pawlowski said. “Sure enough, they got in a groove, made a rally and we had to bring in our closer.”
Troy head coach Bobby Pierce looked at the free bases Auburn gave his team and was frustrated with the inability to take advantage of it. Tuesday, the teams were tied at 4-all in the fourth before the Tigers broke the game wide open.
“I’m very disappointed in the last two nights because we didn’t get enough done,” Pierce said. “When you have a good offensive team, you have to find ways to get guys in.”
The Trojans got good pitching at the end from relievers Fred Lewis (two innings, one hit) and Chrs Sorce (one inning, two strikeouts), but the only hits came from Ditthardt, Watson, Miles Hoyle and J.R. Myers.
Catcher Tony Caldwell led Auburn with his 3-for-4 perfromance. Trent Mummey, Casey McElroy, Morris, Brian Fletcher and Gilmer all had two hits for the Tigers.
Both teams are at home for key conference series this weekend. Auburn hosts Ole Miss, while Troy hosts Middle Tennessee.
