Auburn’s Hunter Morris, shown here celebrating a home run during the Tigers’ win over Mississippi State earlier this season, was named the SEC Player of the Year on Tuesday.
Auburn first baseman Hunter Morris has been named the SEC Baseball Player of the Year, the conference announced Tuesday afternoon.
Three other Tigers — outfielders Trent Mummey and Brian Fletcher and DH Kevin Patterson — were also named to the SEC’s First-Team.
Pitcher Cory Luckie was named the SEC Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, while Mummey was also named to the All-Defensive Team.
Auburn also placed catcher Ryan Jenkins and pitcher Grant Dayton on the All-SEC Second-Team.
Morris was second on the Auburn squad in batting average, hitting .398 in the regular season, which was good enough for fifth in the SEC. Morris led the SEC in slugging percentage (.767), hits (94) and tied with Fletcher for most home runs (20).
“It started three years ago, as soon as I got to Auburn,” Morris said. “A lot has gone into (winning SEC Player of the Year). There have been a lot of struggles, but the most important thing for me is what went on last summer.
“As soon as we got done playing I took it upon myself to try and change my body. Dropping 25 to 30 pounds made a huge difference, not only in my hitting but also in my defense, everything that goes into the game, and it has all paid off. It has been exciting and I am trying to enjoy it right now.”
The SEC coaches selected Florida’s Kevin O’Sullivan as the conference’s Coach of the Year.
O’Sullivan led the Gators to a SEC-best 22-8 record in league play and a 40-13 overall mark and the school’s 20th SEC East crown. It is also the 11th time Florida finished with the best record in the entire conference.
Pawlowski’s Tigers, who won the SEC West for the first time in 15 years, along with qualifying for the SEC Tournament for the first time in six years, finished the regular season with a 20-10 SEC record and a 39-17 overall mark.
Ole Miss’ Drew Pomeraz was named Pitcher of the Year, while Florida’s Austin Maddox was named Freshman of the Year.
