Auburn’s Justin Fradejas can not get to a home run ball in the Tigers’ loss to Ole Miss on Friday night at Plainsman Park.
Zach Blatt’s second collegiate start didn’t go quite as smoothly as his first.
After picking up a win against LSU last weekend, the junior from Opelika surrendered seven runs on seven hits in the first three innings against Ole Miss, putting the Rebels well on their way to a 10-7 win at Plainsman Park on Friday night.
Blatt (2-3) gave up a solo shot to Preston Overbey in the second, then four runs with two outs in the third on an RBI single by Matt Tracy and a three-run home run by Matt Snyder.
A blister on Blatt’s finger that he suffered against LSU could have still been bothering him Friday.
“I just thought his location, he made a few mistakes,” Tigers coach John Pawlowski said. “(Blatt) says (the blister) is not bothering him, but he gave us everything he could do today. He’s a competitor and wants to be out there.”
Bobby Andrews, who had reached base in six of his first seven plate appearances and driven in four runs against Ole Miss (24-16, 9-8 SEC), left the game in the third inning after landing awkwardly on his left wrist on a catch in left field.
Pawlowski said X-rays on Andrews’ wrist were negative for a fracture, and he’s day-to-day.
Ole Miss took an 8-2 lead in the fourth inning on a two-run double by Alex Yarbrough, and Auburn (21-17, 8-9) answered with two runs of its own in the fifth when Casey McElroy came around on a wild pitch and Tony Caldwell scored on a balk.
The Rebels did more damage in the seventh on RBI groundouts by Tracy and Snyder to take a 10-4 lead.
But Auburn wasn’t done yet, plating three in the eighth on an RBI single by Jay Gonzalez and a two-run single by McElroy to close the deficit to 10-7.
Ole Miss closer Bobby Wahl quickly stopped the bleeding, striking out four of the six batters he faced and surrendering only a walk in the final 1 2/3 innings for his third save of the year.
Wahl stranded two runners in the eighth before getting the Tigers, who left 11 on the bases on the night, in order in the ninth to finish off the win for David Goforth (3-5).
“We didn’t get out of the gates very well,” Pawlowski said. “The guys we put in there kept battling back and made it an interesting game, but we got behind and never really got too much going, or the big inning we needed.”
Matt Smith was 3-for-5, and Yarbrough, Miles Hamblin and Blake Newalu each had two hits for Ole Miss, which moved into a tie with Arkansas for the SEC West lead with the win.
McElroy and Caldwell each had two hits for Auburn, which sends Jon Luke Jacobs (1-3, 3.21) to the mound to try for the series win today at noon.
“It’s an important game for a lot of reasons,” Pawlowski said. “Our guys are going to have to flush this out of their systems quickly and be ready to go.”
