Stephen Kohlscheen has signed a National Letter of Intent to play baseball for Auburn beginning in the 2010 season, Auburn head coach John Pawlowski announced.
Kohlscheen is a 6’7” right-handed pitcher who was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 30th round of last week’s Major League Baseball amateur draft.
“Stephen pitched at one of the best junior colleges in the country in Cowley County. His experiences of leading his team to a conference championship and a spot in the Junior College World Series will serve him well next year as an Auburn Tiger,” Pawlowski said.
Kohlscheen has spent the past two seasons at Cowley College, leading the team to the 2009 Junior College World Series in Grand Junction, Colo. In 72 1/3 innings this season spanning 16 appearances, he had a 3.86 ERA with 73 strikeouts against just 27 walks, going 9-2 along the way. That followed up a freshman season in which he was 4-4 with a 2.76 ERA with 42 Ks in 53 innings.
While at Cowley, he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, an academic honor society.
Kohlscheen was a 43rd round pick by the Florida Marlins in the 2007 MLB draft out of Norman North High School in Norman, Okla.
Mummey named Gold Glove award winner
Trent Mummey was named a 2009 ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Division I Gold Glove Award Winner on Thursday morning for his defensive work as Auburn’s everyday centerfielder.
Mummey, who started all 56 games in 2009 and was also named to the SEC All-Defensive Team, had an astounding .995 fielding percentage this past season, leading Auburn’s outfielders with seven outfield assists and 178 putouts while committing just a single error.
“Trent had an exceptional year patrolling the outfield for us this year,” Pawlowski said. “He has worked very hard on his game and I am very proud of him for this accomplishment.”
The award, which is in its third year, goes to the player recognized by coaches across the country as the best defensive player at his position in the nation.
Mummey also had a solid year at the plate, hitting .289 with 15 home runs and 42 RBI to go along with 12 doubles and three triples, leading the team with 17 steals.
