AU BASEBALL: Tigers host Georgia Southern

05/12 at 12:02 AM

Auburn will wrap up the non-conference portion of its schedule tonight at Plainsman Park when it plays host to Georgia Southern at 6 p.m.

Auburn (28-24) is 19-6 in non-conference action this season and will send Ty Kelley (0-0, 3.86) to the hill against Georgia Southern’s Andy Moye (5-1, 6.09).

Kelley has been strong of late, a rare consistent arm in the Tigers’ bullpen. He has not allowed an earned run in his last 10 outings, all of which came in relief. He hasn’t started a game since March 7, when he went four innings and allowed four runs in a no-decision against Brown.

His only other start came against Florida State in February, when he surrendered three earned runs (four total) in 4 1/3 innings, which also resulted in a no-decision.

Georgia Southern brings a 35-14 overall record into Tuesday’s game.

The Tigers and Eagles have played just once in their history. Auburn beat GSU, 11-5, in a 2000 second-round NCAA regional game at Georgia Tech.

As of last Tuesday, the Eagles carried an RPI of 30, four places in front of the Tigers. Auburn was officially eliminated from SEC Tournament contention this past weekend at Kentucky, but its NCAA tournament hopes are still alive. A win tonight and a strong showing this weekend against No. 12 Alabama at Plainsman Park certainly wouldn’t hurt.

Though the Tigers picked up a win Sunday against the Wildcats, their trademark late-season struggles have been magnified by the absence of slugging third baseman Joseph Sanders. Auburn is 1-8 in SEC play since Sanders went down with a broken jaw in an April 21 game against Samford. The team has scored just 38 runs in his absence, while allowing 66.

Sanders was to visit a doctor in Birmingham on Monday to find out if he can play this weekend against the Crimson Tide.

Tonight is Two Dollar Tuesday and Auburn City Schools Night.

Popcorn flyers were distributed to all students/teachers middle school and below. Kids and teachers may redeem the top portion of the flyer at the concession stand for a free box of popcorn and redeem the tear-off voucher at the bottom for one free admission.
