AU IN THE OLYMPICS: Burns takes seventh in 100-meter dash

BEIJING — Former Auburn track and field athlete Marc Burns of Trinidad and Tobago placed seventh in the finals of the men’s 100-meter dash Saturday at the Olympic Games.

Burns, who had equaled a season best with a time of 9.97 seconds in the semifinals earlier in the day, posted a time of 10.01 in the finals.

Usain Bolt of Jamaica won the race with a world-record time of 9.69 seconds.

This is the third Olympic appearance for Burns, who competed in the 4x100-meter relay in the 2000 Sydney Olympics, and ran in the 100 meters and the 4x100-meter relay at the 2004 Athens Games.

He was disqualified in the opening round during his only previous appearance in the 100 meters at the Olympics.

Former Tiger Kerron Stewart of Jamaica advanced in the women’s 100-meter dash preliminaries Saturday morning, finishing sixth overall.

She posted a time of 10.98 seconds in the quarterfinals, becoming the only woman to break 11 seconds in both rounds Saturday.

She will run in the semifinals today at 6:45 a.m., with the finals following at 9:25 a.m.

Timicka Clarke also competed in the women’s 100-meter dash, but did not advance out of the opening round. She clocked a time of 12.16 seconds, placing sixth in her heat and 56th overall.

Former Tiger Gabor Mate just missed advancing to the finals of the men’s discus. Mate finished 13th, missing out on the final qualifying spot by just four centimeters.
