BEIJING — Three Auburn swimmers earned medals Saturday night without breaking a sweat.
Former Tiger Mark Gangloff, rising senior Matt Targett and former Tiger Margaret Hoelzer all got medals for their teams’ performances in relays Saturday night.
All three participated in the preliminaries but did not swim in the final.
Gangloff earned a gold medal after the American team of Michael Phelps, Aaron Peirsol, Brendan Hansen and Jason Lezak won gold in the men’s 400-meter medley relay. The gold medal is the second of his career, after also earning gold in Athens in 2004 after swimming in the preliminaries.
Targett got a silver as the Australian team finished just behind the Americans. It was Targett’s first silver and second medal of these Olympics. He earned bronze in the 400-meter freestyle relay.
Hoelzer got a silver when the American team of Natalie Coughlin, Dara Torres, Rebecca Soni and Christine Magnuson finished just behind the Australians in the women’s 400-meter medley relay.
The medal is the third of Hoelzer’s career.
