AU ROUNDUP: 4 baseball players honored by SEC

Auburn picked up three postseason honors from the Southeastern Conference coaches, as junior third baseman Joseph Sanders was named to the All-SEC Second Team, senior outfielder Ben Jones was named the SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year and sophomore outfielder Trent Mummey was voted to the All Defensive Team.

Kris West was also recognized for his work in the community and was named to the Community Service Team, the league office announced on Tuesday.

Alabama outfielder Kent Matthes was selected the 2009 SEC Baseball Player of the Year, LSU’s Louis Coleman was named SEC Pitcher of the Year and Florida first baseman Preston Tucker and LSU reliever Matty Ott were named SEC Co-Freshmen of the Year by vote of the league’s 12 head baseball coaches. The coaches also tabbed LSU skipper Paul Mainieri as SEC Coach of the Year.

Madrigal to join baseball team in ‘10
Drew Madrigal has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Auburn baseball team for the 2010 season, Auburn head baseball coach John Pawlowski announced Tuesday.

Madrigal, at 6-foot-3, 210 pounds, is a right handed pitcher/outfielder at Mt. San Jacinto Junior College in San Jacinto, Calif., and helped lead MSJC to a Foothill Conference title while earning 2009 conference MVP honors.

“Drew is a special talent that will help our pitching staff immediately,” Pawlowski said. “He had a tremendous year against quality competition in the California Junior College ranks. He led the all of California Junior College in strikeouts and helped his team reach the final eight in the playoffs.”

Recognized as a 2009 Junior College All-American, Madrigal went 9-4 on the mound with a 3.39 ERA in 15 starts, striking out a team-best 138 in 106 1/3 innings. 

At the plate, he hit .404 in 166 at-bats, hitting a team-high seven home runs and driving in a team-best 48 runs. He was also named a First Team All-Foothill Conference selection as a freshman and sophomore.

Men’s tennis duo set NCAA tourney
COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Auburn senior Alexey Tsyrenov and sophomore Tim Puetz are set to begin competition in the 2009 NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Championships for singles and doubles, which will commence today at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center at Texas A&M University.

Tsyrenov will participate in the singles competition that will begin today and will compete alongside Puetz in doubles action, which is set to start on Thursday.

Tsyrenov and Puetz, currently ranked 10th, will take on Dennis Nevolo and Ruan Roelofse, the No. 21 pair in the ITA rankings, of Illinois.
