Auburn senior forward Korvotney Barber was named to the Preseason Coaches All-SEC second-team, the Southeastern Conference office announced Monday.

“It is a pretty good accomplishment considering I only played 10 games last year,” Barber said. “I will strive to get better and hope the team gets better. I think we will have a good year this year. The new players have added a lot to the team. They are working hard and are real coachable. That means a lot.”

Barber averaged 13.8 points and 6.9 rebounds as a junior last year, as he missed the rest of the season after breaking his left hand three minutes into the 10th game of the year vs. Towson on Dec. 29. The Manchester, Ga., native was leading the nation shooting 72.0 percent from the field.

Soccer’s Whitworth honored by SEC
For the second straight week and the third time this season, Auburn’s senior goalkeeper Allison Whitworth has been named the Southeastern Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week.

Whitworth, from Birmingham, stopped all eight shots that Alabama put on frame in Auburn’s 4-0 win over its cross-state rival, clinching a share of Auburn’s sixth SEC West title. The shutout was the third in the last four games for Whitworth, who has seven on the season and 21 in her career, second in Auburn history and tied for ninth in league history.

Auburn finished the 2008 conference season 7-3-1 (11-7-2 overall) and will face Tennessee in the first round of the SEC Tournament at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Orange Beach Soccer Complex.
