AU ROUNDUP: Baseball begins 5-game home stretch today

Coming off of a dramatic series victory at Mississippi State last weekend in Starkville, Miss., in which the Auburn baseball team had to rally twice to score victories, the Tigers return home for five games this week, beginning at 6 p.m. today against Georgia State.

Auburn (20-10, 6-6 SEC) has collected 10 come-from-behind victories this season.

The long ball played a big part of both wins over MSU, as Joseph Sanders hit a tie-breaking, three-run home run in the ninth on Friday and
Tony Caldwell hit two on Sunday, including the fourth in Auburn’s four-homer fifth.

Auburn has now tallied 64 home runs this year, which stands as the fourth-most in school history.

Auburn will send freshman right-hander Dexter Price (3-0, 4.68) to the mound today game against Georgia State.

Tonight is Two Dollar Tuesday and all tickets are just $2, while Wednesday’s game against Bethune-Cookman is Fan Appreciation Day and admission is free.

Three former Tigers on MLB Opening Day rosters
Three former Auburn baseball players were listed on MLB Opening Day rosters as play got underway on Monday across the American and National Leagues.

Gabe Gross is in his second year with the American League Champion Tampa Bay Rays, while Tim Hudson and David Ross are with the Atlanta Braves.

Gross made his MLB debut in 2004 with the Toronto Blue Jays and has also played for the Milwaukee Brewers in his five-year big league career.

A career .242 hitter, he played in 127 games last year as the Rays played in the World Series for the first time in franchise history.

He played at Auburn from 1999-2001 and was an All-American outfielder in 2000. Hudson is in his fifth year with the Braves, but will start the year on the 60-day disabled list following Tommy John surgery last summer.

In 10 big league seasons, he has compiled a 146-77 record with a 3.48 career ERA, striking out 1,372 with both the Braves and the Oakland As. He played at Auburn in 1996-97, winning the Rotary Smith Award in 1997 as the National Player of the Year.

Ross begins his first season with Atlanta after debuting in the big leagues in 2002 with the Los Angeles Dodgers. A career .222 hitter, he played at Auburn alongside Hudson in 1996-97.

Men’s golf in 7th
MADISON, Miss. — The Auburn men’s golf team shot a 39-over 615 and is in seventh place after the first two rounds of the Reunion Intercollegiate at the par 72, 7,416-yard Reunion Golf and Country Club on Monday.

The Tigers improved by shooting a second round 302 after a first round 313. Senior Glenn Northcutt (73-149) finished the day in fifth place at five-over par, just six shots off the lead. Freshman Kyle Kopsick (76-154) is currently tied at 25th, junior Cole Moreland (77-156) and freshman John Stembridge (76-156) are both tied for 36th and senior Keith White (80-162) is tied for 57th.

Women’s golf 4th at UF
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Four Tigers finished the day in the top 25 as the No. 7 Auburn women’s golf team finished 36 holes of the SunTrust Lady Gator Invitational in fourth place with a 51-over-par 611. The Tigers are eight strokes out of first place, a spot currently held by Duke and Alabama at 43-over 603.

Sophomore Cydney Clanton and junior Candace Schepperle led the Tigers through the first two rounds, carding 12-over-par 152s to enter the final round in a tie for 14th. Clanton went 77-75-152 in the first two rounds, while Schepperle posted rounds of 73-79-152.

Auburn was the only team in the 16-team field to place four players in the top 25 as freshmen Patricia Sanz and Haley Wilson each posted 14-over 154 to finish the day in a tie for 22nd.

Sanz tallied a 79 in the first round, but rebounded for a 75 in the second, while Wilson was consistent with 77s in both rounds.

Sophomore Sarah Thead rounded out the lineup for Auburn as she finished the day in a tie for 52nd with rounds of 81-78-159.

Also competing at the tournament is Auburn freshman Madison Overbey, who is playing as an individual. She finished the day in a tie for 33rd, carded 8-over-par 78s in both rounds to finish the day with a 16-over-par 156.
