Senior outfielder Ben Jones has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Baseball Second Team, it was announced Tuesday by the Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America.

Jones, who carries a 3.84 GPA while majoring in mechanical engineering, was the only player from the Southeastern Conference to be named to any of the three University Division teams.

Jones, from Decatur, was named Auburn’s Male Student-Athlete of the Year for his work in the classroom as well as on the field, where he hit .274 with 10 home runs and 50 RBI in his first year as a full-time starter for the baseball team. The left hander contributed 13 doubles, a triple and scored 35 runs in his final season, all of which topped his totals from his first three seasons combined.

Jones becomes the first Auburn baseball player to be named an Academic All-America by CoSIDA since Gabe Gross was voted to the second team in 2001. Other Auburn baseball players to be named to the academic All-America teams are Joe Haefner (1972, First Team), Robert Sorrell (1981, Second Team and 1982, First Team), David Wilson (1987, Third Team), Jeff Leatherman (1991, First Team), Adam Sullivan (1997, Second Team) and Casey Dunn (1999, First Team)
