ATLANTA — Auburn’s Dan Mazzaferro and Kelly Marx finished first and third, respectively, on the platform Sunday during the final session of the Georgia Tech Diving Invitational at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center.
“It was an excellent competition, Dan, Kelly and Reuben Ross battled back and forth all day,” said Auburn diving coach Jeff Shaffer. “We had some excellent scores for the fall, and Kelly was able to learn a new dive while we have been in Atlanta, one that will really improve his opportunity to score.”
Mazzaferro took the platform title with a 400.80, edging out Miami’s Reuben Ross who finished second with a 400.30. Marx slipped in at third place with a score of 391.75.
Gymnastics ranked 15th in preseason
The Auburn gymnastics team has been tabbed as the preseason No. 15 squad in the nation according to GymInfo the website announced over the weekend.
“We’re excited that the preseason ranking are up because that means that fall practice is almost over and the season is about to start,” head gymnastics coach Jeff Thompson said. “Being ranked 15th is a nice reflection of what we have done over the past several years. The other coaches respect what we’ve done and know that we’re going to have a good team this year.”
Volleyball falls in five sets to Tennessee
Auburn (6-25, 1-19 SEC) showed a relentless attack down to the final point of the season, but was unable to deliver the decisive attack in the fifth set, falling to Tennessee (21-9, 14-5 SEC) 3-2 (25-23, 11-25, 19-25, 25-20, 14-16) on Sunday afternoon in the Student Activities Center.
The loss marks the end of the 2008 season for the Tigers and also for senior Jessica Glover. Glover logged a double-double in her final Auburn volleyball match with 20 kills, hitting .317, adding 11 digs.
Men’s Tennis finishes strong in Fall Classic
The Auburn men’s tennis team finished the 2008 Auburn Fall Classic at the Yarbrough Tennis Center and closed out their fall season on Sunday, winning all but one of its matches.
Finishing 9-1 on the day, Auburn closed the weekend with a 23-7 record.
The Tigers look to ride their fall momentum into the spring as they begin their spring season at the Auburn Spring Classic, January 21-23.
