Tigers host 2 SEC foes
The No. 21 Auburn men’s tennis team will host No. 25 Mississippi State today and No. 32 Ole Miss on Sunday at the Yarbrough Tennis Center.
Today’s matchup will be the 41st in history, with the series tied at 20 apiece. On Sunday, the Tigers and Rebels will face off in for the 54th time, with Ole Miss owning a 24-29 advantage.
Last weekend, Auburn (12-7, 4-4 SEC) finished the weekend 1-1 after losing on Friday to No. 34 LSU, 5-2, and defeating No. 69 Arkansas on Sunday, 5-2. Auburn was led by senior Tim Puetz and sophomore Andreas Mies who both finished the weekend 2-0.
The Bulldogs (10-7, 5-3 SEC) clinched a major upset over fourth-ranked Tennessee on Friday as MSU ousted the Vols, 6-1. Freshman Malte Stropp extended his win streak to six on Saturday and earned the highest-ranked triumph of his career over 56th ranked Matteo Fago of Tennessee.
Ole Miss (10-6, 4-4 SEC) dropped both its matches this past weekend to No. 9 Georgia, 4-3, and No. 4 Tennessee, 4-3.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
AU travels to Ole Miss, MSU
The Auburn Women’s Tennis team (4-15, 0-8 SEC) will hit the road this weekend to face off against No. 34 Ole Miss and Mississippi State. The Tigers will take on the Bulldogs at 3 p.m. todayand the Rebels at 1 p.m. Sunday.
Mississippi State is winless in its last nine matches, making the Bulldogs 2-12 on the season and 0-8 in the SEC. The Bulldogs will be looking for three freshmen in Alexandra Perper (5-7, 2-4 SEC), Vivian Pietraroria (3-9, 0-6 SEC) and Roseline Dion (2-9, 0-4 SEC) to continue to develop and get key wins for the team as they make up half the starting lineup.
The Rebels are currently 9–8 on the season and 2–7 in SEC play. Ole Miss is currently on a two-match losing streak as it hosts Alabama and Auburn this weekend.
Last weekend, Auburn faced off against No. 53 LSU and No. 15 Arkansas in the last home matches of the season. On Friday, Auburn fell to LSU 5-2, coming away with the doubles point and a Paulina Schippers upset over No. 66 Whitney Wolf, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. On Sunday, Auburn lost to Arkansas 6-1, with Sophomore Plamena Kurteva coming away with the only win from the match for the Tigers.
TRACK AND FIELD
Tigers headed South
The Auburn track and field teams compete in their third meet of the outdoor season today and Saturday when the Tigers visit Tallahassee, Fla., to compete in the Seminole Invitational.
A limited number of teams will compete at the meet, but competition will still be strong. Host Florida State has the nation’s No. 4-ranked men’s team, while the Seminole women are ranked eighth nationally. Georgia Tech is also slated to compete, as are teams from Coastal Carolina, Georgia Southern and Samford, among other schools.
Auburn enters the competition with the No. 12-ranked women’s team nationally, while the Tiger men are ranked 16th after two outdoor competitions. The Tigers won seven individual events while hosting the Tiger Track Classic last weekend at Hutsell-Rosen Track.
