SPECIAL TO THE NEWS

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — Auburn’s Quan Prowell has been selected to participate in the prestigious Portsmouth Invitational through Saturday.

For the past 55 years, the P.I.T. has invited 64 of the best college basketball players (seniors) from across the nation to participate in a four-day, 12-game tournament in front of representatives from every NBA team.

“I am very happy for Quan to be selected to this highly regarded tournament,” said head coach Jeff Lebo.  “This is an important step in the NBA Draft process, and I wish Quan the best.”

Prowell ranked 16th in the SEC in two categories as he averaged 15.0 points and 6.3 rebounds per game as a senior this season for the Tigers. The Columbus, Ga., native ranked seventh in the league shooting 54.4 percent from the field and 17th with 32.52 minutes played per game.

Coventry takes home another gold medal
MANCHESTER, England — Former Auburn swimmer Kirsty Coventry earned her second gold medal in as many days on Thursday as she won the 100m backstroke at the 9th FINA World Short Course Championships in Manchester, England.

Coventry, a three-time Olympic medalist from Zimbabwe, won the event with a time of 57.10, breaking the meet and national record time of 57.99 that she set in the semifinals. She is coming off her World record on Wednesday in the 400m IM — her second World record of 2008.

Coventry led a pack of three Tigers in the 100m back as Australia’s Rachel Goh, who took the year off from the Auburn swim team to compete in Olympic Trials, finished fourth behind her with an Australian national record time of 57.83. The time breaks the Aussie record time of 58.10 that she set in semifinals.
