PINEHURST, N.C. — Rising senior Cydney Clanton advanced to the quarterfinals of the 108th North and South Championship with a pair of Thursday match play victories at Pinehurst No. 2.
The Concord, N.C., native started the day with a 3 and 2 win over stroke-play qualifier medalist Christine Appleton. Clanton then followed with a 4 and 3 win over Kent State’s Martina Gavier.
Clanton, the 2009 North and South runner-up, earned an automatic exemption into the tournament and will take on Arkansas’ Emma Lavy at 7 a.m. today.
Also competing in Thursday match play were rising junior and Central grad Haley Wilson and former Auburn golfer Candace Schepperle. Wilson opened the day with a 20-hole win over Stanford’s Kristina Wong but was knocked out 4 and 3 by Pepperdine’s Lisa McCloskey in round three.
No. 2 seed Schepperle fell 2 and 1 to Ole Miss’s Haley Millsap in Round 2. Schepperle defeated Desirae Dubreuil 4 and 2 in first-round play.

Caldwell, McElroy named All-Stars
Tony Caldwell and Casey McElroy have each been named to the 2010 Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star Game, which will be played Wednesday at Boston’s historic Fenway Park. Caldwell plays for the Wareham Gatemen and McElroy is with the Hyannis Harbor Hawks.
Caldwell, who will be a senior at Auburn, is hitting .284 with two doubles and one home run while McElroy, who will be a junior next year, has a .283 batting average and is tied for the league lead with 19 RBI.
