Tigers fall to Kentucky, 10-2
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Meagan Aull went 4-for-4 with five RBIs to lead No. 18 Kentucky softball to a 10-2 victory in six innings over No. 23 Auburn on Saturday afternoon, evening the series. The final game will be held at noon Sunday.
Auburn’s record dropped to 37-16 overall and 14-13 in the SEC, while the Wildcats improved to 36-12 overall and 14-8 in the SEC.
“Kentucky came out and really got after it,” Auburn head coach Tina Deese said. “They swung the bats really well.”
Lauren Schmalz started and took the loss to fall to 14-6. Schmalz allowed seven runs, all earned, on nine hits with two walks and two strikeouts in three and two-thirds innings of work.
After Kentucky went up 2-0, Auburn’s Kyndall White cut the deficit in half with a leadoff home run in the top of the second inning. It was White’s sixth home run of the season and 28th of her career.
Katie Colton tied the game for the Tigers with a leadoff home run over the wall in right-center in the top of the third inning. It was Colton’s first home run of the season and second of her career.
But the Wildcats come on to score eight more runs over the next four innings, including three in the fourth, to cruise to victory.
WOMEN’S GOLF
Finishes 13th at NCAA East Regional
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — The Auburn women’s golf team concluded its 2010-11 season Saturday at the NCAA East Regional Championship, finishing 13th with a 39-over-par 903. The Tigers carded a 14-over 302 in the final round of the tournament. The top eight qualify for the NCAA Championships on May 18-21.
“It is a disappointing way to finish the season, but we had a lot of success this year, including the SEC Championship, and some bright spots for the future,” said Auburn head coach Kim Evans. “We will say goodbye to a great player in Cydney Clanton, who will go down as one of the best ever for Auburn. But, we have some very good players returning next year and we are excited about what we saw out of them this year.”
Clanton, a native of Concord, N.C., was the top Tiger at the tournament, carding a final-round 72 to tie for 31st with a 6-over 222. Five strokes behind Clanton were freshman Marta Sanz and junior Haley Wilson in a tie for 52nd with 11-over 227s. Sanz carded a 4-over 76 on Saturday, while Wilson posted a 6-over 78.
Junior Patricia Sanz tied for 69th, submitting a final-round 77 to finish with a 14-over 230. Just one stroke behind her was sophomore Carlie Yadloczky in a tie for 78th. She also carded a final-round 77 to finish with a 150-over 231.
In the team race, Alabama took the regional title with a 2-over 866. Individually, Alabama’s Stephanie Meadow took the regional title with a 9-under 207.
