AU ROUNDUP: Swimming and diving sweep Penn State to stay perfect

Junior Katie Gardocki and sophomore Zane Grothe combined to win five individual events, the men’s and women’s teams combined to post 12 NCAA provisional qualifying times, and the Tigers remained perfect on the year with a sweep of Penn State on Friday afternoon at the James E. Martin Aquatics Center.

The Auburn men improved to 2-0 with a 152-86 win, and the Tiger women moved to 3-0 with a 138.5-99.5 victory over the Nittany Lions. Penn State’s men and women fell to 1-1.

The women had the top times/scores in 11 of 13 events while the men were not beaten in any of the 13 events on the day. The Tigers exhibitioned the last two events of the day.

The Tigers will return to action Friday with a huge showdown against SEC rival Georgia. The meet is set to begin at 3 p.m. at the James E. Martin Aquatics Center.

Volleyball fights LSU to finish, falls 3-1
Four Auburn players had double-doubles and the Tiger volleyball team fought to the last point in all four sets against SEC West-leading LSU, but ultimately fell in a tight battle with the Bayou Bengals, 3-1 (26-28, 35-33, 25-27, 23-25) on Friday night at the Student Activities Center.

Auburn (10-15, 4-11 SEC) had numerous opportunities in all four sets to pull out a victory, but LSU (16-8, 9-5 SEC) was able to score points at just the right time and leave Auburn with a hard-fought win.

Four Tigers posted double-doubles on the night. Senior Kelly Fidero had her second-straight effort with 20+ kills, recording exactly 20 to go along with 10 digs for her second consecutive double-double and the third of her career.

Sarah Bullock had 15 kills and 17 digs for her ninth double-double of the year. Both Auburn setters had double-doubles as well: Chelsea Wintzinger recorded 34 assists and 10 digs for her third of the season, and Christina Solverson had her first of the year with 20 assists and 13 digs.

The Tigers will be back in action Sunday afternoon as another SEC West opponent — the Arkansas Razorbacks — visits the Student Activities Center. First serve is set for 1:30 p.m., and admission is free.

Equestrian wins two in South Dakota
Brookings, S.D. — The Auburn equestrian team remained perfect on the season, improving to 6-0 overall while claiming all eight MVP honors by defeating both South Dakota State and Delaware State on Saturday.

Auburn first defeated South Dakota State, 11-5, while claiming two of the four events and all four MVP honors.

Against Delaware State, Auburn took home all four MVPs and claimed three of four events, winning 13-3.

Next up, Auburn will travel to Athens, Ga., to take on Georgia. The meet will take place on Friday, Nov. 11, at noon at the Georgia University Equestrian Complex.

Men’s tennis has strong day at UCF Invite
ORLANDO, Fla. — Auburn’s men’s tennis team had another strong day at the UCF Invitational, winning seven of nine matches on Saturday against opponents from Miami and Florida-Gulf Coast.

The Tigers swept all three of their doubles matches, all by identical 8-3 scores. Auburn’s Alex Stamchev and Daniel Cochrane defeated Gabriel Flores and Diego Soto of Miami, then Dennis Lengsfeld and Lucas Lopasso teamed up to knock off Miami’s Victor Mauz and Santiago Nieto.

The Tiger team of Rafael Rondino and Michael Wardell made it a doubles sweep with a win over Lance Lvovsky and Colin Brown of FGCU.

In singles, the Tigers took four out of six matches.

The Tigers will wrap up their fall season Sunday with the final day of competition at the UCF Invitational beginning at 9:30 a.m.
