Auburn senior Matt Targett was named National Swimmer of the Week in a Tuesday release by CollegeSwimming.com.
The 2008 Olympian led the Tigers to a 13th consecutive SEC title with a flawless performance.
The 2008-09 SEC Male Swimmer of the Year put his name on a new SEC record every time he entered the water, a perfect 7-of-7.
“I’ve been measuring myself against Cesar (Cielo) last year,” said Targett. “He won this award at this point last year and went on to be successful at NCAAs. I’m enthused.
“I’d like to commend my team. To win in the fashion we did at the SEC Championships was fantastic.“
The Auburn men started SECs by recording a new NCAA top-time in the 200 MR. The team of Jared White, Michael Silva, Targett and Jakob Andkjaer touched in with a new SEC record 1:23.69, ranking second all-time at Auburn. Targett swam a 19.67 butterfly leg.
In the 50-free prelims, Targett slashed his way to a 18.89 and a new SEC Championships record. Later that evening, the Hawthorne, Australia, native came withing five-hundredths of Cesar Cielo’s US Open record, timing in at 18.52.
“Matt’s definitely going fast,” said Auburn co-head men’s coach Brett Hawke. “He can go faster. We shaved him down for this meet but we didn’t rest him. He’s definitely got more in him. He’s been working hard all year. I’m certain he’s going to go under that record.”
On day two of SECs, the squad of Andkjaer, Targett, Kohlton Norys and Gideon Louw teamed up for the 200 FR. The four sprinters posted a new SEC Championship record time of 1:15.47, roughly two seconds ahead of No. 2 Tennessee and the NCAA “A” cutline.
Day three saw Targett set the new SEC 100 fly record, swimming a 45.02 to undercut former Tiger Alexei Puninski’s previous record of 45.60.
Targett’s time was the fifth fastest in history.
In the men’s 400 MR, the Auburn squad of Pascal Wollach, Adam Klein, Logan Madson and Targett timed in at 3:04.58 to beat Georgia by nearly 5 seconds. Targett timed in at 40.53, swimming the anchor leg.
For the final day of competition, the Auburn men’s sprinters looked continue their dominance in the 100 free finals — and they did. The Tigers went 1,2,3. Auburn Olympian Matt Targett set a new SEC record and NCAA top-time, touching in at 41.55 to take first.
“Going out there and winning those four team titles meant more to me than the three individual events,” said Targett. “I love the team aspect to college swimming. There’s something to be said for walking out there with your best friends and throwing down a record time.“
The Tigers finished their championship route posting a new US Open record in the 400 FR. The team of Andkjaer, Louw, Norys and Targett set a new US Open, NCAA, SEC records of 2:46.03. The 2008 Australian Olympian swam a 40.41 split to finish the day.
