PINEHURST, N.C. — Three Auburn golfers advanced out of the first round of match play Wednesday at the 108th Women’s North & South Championship.

Rising senior Cydney Clanton, the No. 1 overall seed in the tournament, advanced after posting a 1-up victory over Tara McFadden. A native of nearby Concord, N.C., Clanton will take on Christie Appleton in the second round at 6:30 a.m. today.

Clanton, the 2009 North & South runner-up, earned an automatic exemption into the tournament and will take on Appleton, who won the stroke play qualifier with a 2-over 74.

Right behind Clanton as the No. 2 overall seed in the tournament is Birmingham native Candace Schepperle, who just completed her senior season at Auburn. Schepperle defeated Desiree Dubreuil in the first round, 4 and 2. The pair was all square after 10 holes, but Schepperle won four of the next six to advance to a 7:34 a.m. match against Haley Milsap today.

Also competing Wednesday was rising junior and Central product Haley Wilson, the third of Auburn’s automatic qualifiers to the event. Wilson defeated Kelly Shon, 3 and 2, and will take on Kristina Wong at 8:30 a.m. today.

Two rounds of match play are scheduled for today with the quarterfinals and semifinals slated for Friday. The 36-hole championship final will tee off at 7 a.m. Saturday. For more information and live scoring, go to http://www.Pinehurst.com.
