MIAMI — Freshman pitcher Jenee Loree handed Tina Deese her 400th win as head coach at Auburn with a no hitter as the Tigers defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 2-0, at the FIU Tournament on Friday afternoon.
“It feels good, as a coach, to get to this type of milestone,” Deese said. “No coach ever gets to that point as quickly as they wanted. It was a good win against Corpus Christi, and a good day overall. Now we just need to take the positives from today and carry them into the rest of the weekend.”
The Tigers improved to 2-0 with the win, while Texas A&M-Corpus Christi fell to 0-1. Auburn will take on host FIU at 3 p.m. today and No. 18 North Carolina at 5 p.m.
Loree’s no-hitter was the first by an Auburn pitcher in a seven inning game since Holly Currie no-hit Ole Miss on May 6, 2006. Currie fanned eight and walked two against the Rebels.
In her first collegiate start, Loree struck out eight and walked four batters in seven innings of work. She faced 23 batters, got four flyouts and seven groundouts.
It was the 19th no-hitter in Auburn history.
Myesha Finney gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead against the Islanders in the third inning. Kayla Tatum reached on fielding error by the first baseman on her sac bunt. After stealing second, Tatum came in to score on Finney’s two-out single to center.
The Tigers took advantage of another Islanders’ miscue to take a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning. Lauren Guzman was hit by a pitch, stole second and then moved to third on a ground out by Alexa Martinez. With Taryn Gray batting, Tallman uncorked a wild pitch that bounced in front of the plate and allowed Guzman to score.
The Islanders threatened only once, getting runners on second and third in the fifth inning. A pair of walks and a sac bunt put the Islanders in position to tie the game, but Loree got Sandy Schumann to foul out to end the threat.
Loree would retire the side in order in the sixth and seventh to preserve the victory.
In the first game of the day, junior pitcher Anna Thompson fanned 10 through five innings of work and freshman catcher Elizabeth Eisterhold drove in a pair of runs as the Auburn softball team defeated Jacksonville, 5-0, in the first game of the tournament on Friday morning.
In earning her first win of the season, Thompson allowed just two hits in five innings of work and did not allow a runner to advance to second base. Thompson did not issue a walk and hit one batter.
Ashley Iveson (0-1) took the loss for Jacksonville University (0-1).
Iveson went five innings, allowing six hits and five runs (two earned) and striking out three.
The Tigers plated a run in the top of the first off a sacrifice fly to left by Eisterhold. Kayla Tatum walked to open the game and moved to second on Kyndall White’s bunt single. After Myesha Finney was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Eisterhold hit a sharp line drive that was caught by Kat Engler, but allowed Tatum to score easily from third for a 1-0 Auburn lead.
Eisterhold extended the Tigers lead to 2-0 in the sixth with an RBI single to center. Tatiana Fernandez doubled with one out and was lifted for pinch-runner Cassie Trosclair, who moved to third on an infield single by Finney. Eisterhold then brought Trosclair home with a single that landed just in front of center fielder Kayla Ouellet.
Still in the sixth, the Tigers pushed the lead to 3-0 after a Jacksonville fielding error by first baseman Amber Moseley. With two outs and Finney at third and pinch-runner Katie Colton at second for Eisterhold, Amber Harrison hit a ground ball to the left side, but Moseley bobbled the throw from short, allowing Finney to score and Colton and Harrison to advance to third and second, respectively.
Lindsey Harrelson followed with a single through the left side that plated both Colton and Harrison to give Auburn a 5-0 edge.
Freshman pitcher Jenee Loree came in for Thompson and pitched two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out four.
