Two members of the Auburn women’s track and field team were honored by the Southeastern Conference on Monday, as junior Sheniqua Ferguson was named SEC Female Runner of the Year and Maya Pressley was named SEC Freshman Field Athlete of the Year.

Ferguson earned her award largely on the strength of her performance at the SEC Outdoor Championships. She earned the Commissioner’s Trophy as the high female point scorer at the meet by winning the 100 meters and 200 meters, and running on the winning 4x100-meter relay team.

Ferguson won the SEC title in the 100 meters by clocking a season-best time of 11.19 seconds, which ranks fourth in Auburn history. In the 200 meters, she had a time of 23.09 in the finals, after posting a mark of 23.08 in the prelims that is tied for fifth in school history. She helped the 4x100-meter relay team win its second straight SEC crown in that event with a time of 43.38 that is third best in school history.

Ferguson became the third Auburn runner to earn the SEC Female Runner/Athlete of the Year award, joining Kerron Stewart (2006 and 2007) and Juliet Campbell (1993). She also became just the second Auburn woman to win the Commissioner’s Trophy at the SEC outdoor meet, joining Lacena Golding in 1998.

Pressley was the only freshman woman to win an individual event at the SEC Outdoor Championships, as she earned the title in the high jump by clearing a season-best 1.80 meters (5-10.75). She became the first Auburn woman to win an SEC outdoor title as a freshman.

Pressley has jumped at least 1.78 meters (5-10) in four meets this season, and her season-best ranks tied for seventh best in school history. She is the second Auburn woman to earn an SEC Freshman of the Year award, joining Shelly-Ann Gallimore, who was named SEC Freshman of the Year in 2000.

In addition, the All-SEC teams were announced on Monday, and are based on performances at the SEC Outdoor Championships. Earning first-team honors from the women’s squad were Ferguson, Pressley, Joanna Atkins (400m/400m relay), Nivea Smith (400m relay) and Shaquela Williams (400m relay). Men’s first-team honorees were Ben Cheruiyot (5000m/10,000m) and Felix Kiboiywo (1500m).

Holly Knight (10,000m), Marcus Rowland (100m) and Jean-Pierre Weerts (10,000m) were second-team honorees, and Pressley and Tyler Kennedy (javelin) were named to the All-Freshman team.

Ferguson, Pressley and the rest of the Auburn men’s and women’s squads will participate in the NCAA East Region Preliminary Round from Thursday-Saturday in Greensboro, N.C.
