LYNCHBURG, Va. — The No. 14 Auburn women’s basketball team will play its final game prior to the final exam break at 2 p.m. today, as the Tigers (9-0) travel to Liberty (1-5) in the Vines Center.

Auburn is coming off a record-setting, 119-54 win over Sam Houston State at home on Friday. The Tigers set a new Auburn record with their 119 points and finished the game with the 12th-highest margin of victory with the 65-point win.

Senior point guard Whitney Boddie also picked up the first triple-double of her career, tallying 13 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds. Junior KeKe Carrier led a pack of seven Tigers that finished in double-digits with 19 points in the game.

Known for playing a quick, fast-tempo style of game so far this season, Auburn will take on a Liberty team on Sunday that boasts a very different style.

“They are primarily a half-court offensive and defensive team, but they will shake it up a little bit and play a 1-3-1 full-court press,” said Auburn head coach Nell Fortner. “Their strength is on the half-court and they want you to use the clock as you try to get into your half court sets against their 2-3 zone.”

With a big lineup across the board, Fortner believes the Flames’ size will pose the biggest challenge in the game.

“They have great size and can potentially start three 6-3 kids on the baseline, if Megan Frazee is healthy,” said Fortner. “They want to grind it out and get the ball on the inside.”

The key to the game will be how Auburn’s quickness and Liberty’s physical size match up. With Liberty’s size, Fortner believe the end result of the game will hinge on who can control the rebounding battle.

“The big thing for us is that 1-5 we are quicker than they are and 1-5 they are bigger, so it will be our quickness versus their size,” said Fortner. “The stat that will tell the story of the game is whether or not we can control the glass, because you cannot allow them to get second shots, particularly late in the game when size usually prevails. We also have to put great pressure on the ball, force them out of their sets and force them to put the ball on the floor and make plays. If we let them control the flow of the ballgame, it will be a long day.”

Liberty has had five days off since its last game, a 77-64 loss at James Madison on Dec. 2. The Flames trailed by only 1 point at halftime, but a late JMU surge gave the Dukes the win.

Liberty returns eight letterwinners and three starters from last season’s team that went 28-4 and won the Big South Conference title. The Flames went on to the NCAA Tournament, losing to Old Dominion, 82-62, in the first round. Liberty is under the direction of 10th-year head coach Carey Green, who holds a 214-73 record as Liberty’s head coach.

The Flames were picked to win the Big South Conference title in the preseason coaches’ poll, but have run into tough times since then with injuries dealing the team a 1-5 mark. Megan and Moriah Frazee were selected to the All-Big South Preseason Team with Megan earning the honor of Preseason Player of the Year.

Leading the team so far this season is Frazee, with 23.0 points per game and 10.0 rebounds per game. Next is her sister Moriah Frazee with 11.0, followed by Amber Mays with 9.3 points per game.

As a team, Liberty is shooting 39.6 percent from the field, including 23.7 percent from beyond the arc. They average being beat by 7.5 points per game but manage to out-rebound their opponents by 1.3 per game.

This will be the first meeting between Auburn and Liberty and only the seventh game between the Tigers and a team from the Big South Conference.
