Auburn incurs no penalties from APR scores

Auburn sports teams received no penalties from the NCAA as a result of their multi-year Academic Progress Rate scores, which were released Tuesday.

The APR was designed by the NCAA to track student-athletes’ progress toward degrees, and each Division I team calculates its APR annually based on the eligibility and retention of scholarship student-athletes.

The NCAA calculates an APR for every team at every Division I school, using data collected over a rolling four-year period. Teams can receive two points per student-athlete, one for retaining the athlete in school and another if the athlete makes successful progress toward a degree that year.

Teams scoring below 925 out of 1,000 can face penalties, such as scholarship losses and restrictions on practice and competition.

All but one of the 20 Auburn sports programs evaluated showed improvement, with only women’s golf (991 to 983) decreasing, though the score was still well above the 925-point mark.

“We are obviously pleased that all of our sports met the NCAA threshold for the Academic Progress Rate,” Auburn Athletic Director Jay Jacobs said. “The academic success of our student-athletes has been and will continue to be one of our top goals as a department.”

The Tigers’ three major sports programs all saw jumps in their multi-year scores, football from 935 to 940, men’s basketball from 916 to 934 and baseball from 932 to 940)

Auburn football finished ninth in the SEC in APR—ahead of Ole Miss (939), Tennessee and Arkansas (both 937) and behind Alabama (fifth at 963).

The Tigers’ men’s basketball team also ranked ninth in the conference—LSU (905) and Arkansas (892) were each docked a scholarship for their scores—and the baseball program came next-to-last in the SEC, ahead of Tennessee.

The NCAA reported the national APR average across all sports increased three points to 970, the baseball average went up five points to 959, men’s basketball was up five to 945 and football was up two to 946.

The Auburn men’s indoor and outdoor track and field teams, which were each penalized a half-scholarship last year for a multi-year APR of 914, improved markedly to 948 in this year’s results.

Women’s basketball led the way for the Tigers’ programs with a perfect 1,000—and was one of 909 teams nationally to earn an NCAA Public Recognition Award last week—followed by women’s cross country (990), women’s soccer (987), women’s tennis (986), women’s golf (983) and gymnastics (979).

Tennis (965) earned the highest score of men’s programs.

The NCAA reported 103 teams at 67 schools were sanctioned for poor academic performance this year, compared with 137 teams from 80 schools last year.
