On the eve of the SEC Tournament, two of Auburn’s players were recognized as some of the best the conference has to offer.

Junior shortstop Casey McElroy and senior catcher Tony Caldwell were named to the All-SEC team by the league’s coaches Tuesday, with McElroy earning first-team honors and Caldwell receiving a second-team nod.

McElroy leads the Tigers in batting average (.370), slugging percentage (.555), hits (84), RBI (52), doubles (18), home runs (eight), total bases (126) and sacrifice flies (six). He also ranks in the top 10 in the SEC in all those eight categories.

The 5-foot-8, 179-pounder from Orlando, Fla., has played second base, shortstop and third base for the Tigers this year, consistently batting in the No. 3 slot in the lineup.

Caldwell is hitting .328 this year, with seven home runs and 42 RBI.

He’s one of 13 finalists for the Johnny Bench Award, given to the country’s top collegiate catcher, and has thrown out 23 runners trying to steal this year.

Auburn has placed multiple players on the All-SEC teams two years in a row, after putting six on the teams last year.

This is the first All-SEC selection for both McElroy and Caldwell.

“It’s pretty special,” McElroy said of his first-team selection. “It is something I dreamed about and something Iwanted to be. In the fall that was one of my goals, so it feels pretty good.”
