Former Tigers Cesar Cielo and Eric Shanteau earn medals on the final day of competition at the 2010 Mutual of Omaha Pan Pacific Championships on Saturday night held in Irvine, Calif., at the William Woollet Jr. Aquatics Center.
The Tigers were represented by three swimmers during the evening’s session of the 50 free. Cielo earned silver in the event, touching the wall in 21.64. Gideon Louw, who just finished his senior season at Auburn, finished fifth in 22.08 and former Tiger George Bovell was 15th overall in 22.68.
Shanteau picked up his first medal of the meet, taking the bronze in the 200 breast with a time of 2:10.13. Micah Lawrence, a junior from Pflugerville, Texas, swam in the consolation final of the 200 breast on the women’s side of competition and won her heat, finishing ninth in 2:25.19.
Also competing in the evening session was rising sophomore Hannah Riordan. The Cornwall, Ontario, product qualified for the consolation finals of the 50 free and took 12th in a time of 25.68.
2 Tigers to compete at U.S. Amateur
Auburn men’s golf will be represented by two current golfers, as well as a former All-SEC selection, at the 2010 U.S. Amateur, held this week at the Chambers Bay Golf Course in Tacoma, Wash.
Sophomore Blayne Barber advanced to the event after winning the Sawgrass Country Club sectional in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. Sophomore Michael Hebert advanced as an alternate from the Ritz Carlton Golf Club sectional in Orlando while former Tiger Glenn Northcutt tied for second at the Piedmont Driving Club sectional in Atlanta.
Competition begins today with 18 holes of stroke play, after which the field will be cut to the low 64 scorers. Match play begins Tuesday and the championship concludes with a scheduled 36-hole final match Sunday.
Currently ranked 22nd in the Scratch Players World Amateur Golf Rankings, Barber returns to the U.S. Amateur after competing in the 2008 edition.
“My goal over the next two years is to make the Walker Cup,” said Barber.
“I’ve been trying to play all the big events I can. Making it to the U.S. Amateur is a big help in reaching that goal. I’m incredibly excited to have qualified.“
Barber redshirted the 2009-10 season after transferring from the University of Central Florida, was named to the 2008-09 Five-Man GCAA All-Freshman team and was a three-time Conference USA Golfer-of-the-Week.
Hebert, a summer transfer from Florida State, finished 11th in the NCAA Central Regional and helped the Seminoles to a third-place finish in the NCAA Championship by finishing 18th,
individually.
Northcutt will make his third appearance at the U.S. Amateur.
The Dothan native finished his Auburn career after the 2008-09 season with a 73.18 scoring average, the eighth best in school history. Northcutt counted 122-of-136 rounds, carded 38 sub-par rounds and earned 13 top-10 finishes through four seasons on The Plains.
