The Auburn men’s basketball team will aim to string together two wins today for the first time all season when it hosts Arkansas-Pine Bluff at the Auburn Arena.
After defeating Georgia Southwestern by 28 points Tuesday, the Tigers (2-4) will face a winless Golden Lions (0-6) squad from the SWAC that’s averaging 29.7 points less than its opponents this season.
Despite opening the season with three straight losses, Auburn’s team is slowly coming together thanks in part to a new starting lineup against Georgia Southwestern that included freshman Josh Langford and junior Tony Neysmith.
Head coach Tony Barbee doesn’t want his players to get too far ahead of themselves just yet, though.
“With a young team, with that being the case, you have to be careful and watch the psyche of the team,” Barbee said. “You don’t want to take your foot off the gas too soon. So, we are going to stay on them and make sure these guys understand that just because you beat a team, you don’t back up. You keep taking steps forward.”
Auburn remains in last place in the SEC still, just behind Alabama and Ole Miss.
Langford and Neysmith will most likely start for the Tigers again today, along with Andre Malone, who’s the team’s leading scorer with an average of 14.3 points per game.
Savalance Townsend is averaging 11.8 points per game for Arkansas Pine-Bluff, while Allen Smith is averaging 10.2 points per contest.
“They are a very explosive team who tries to get out and run and try to make plays in the open court and in transition,” Barbee said of the Golden Bears.
