RB Enrique Davis decommits from Auburn

One of the biggest stars in Auburn’s 2008 recruiting class appears set on spending his college career elsewhere.
Tailback Enrique Davis told Auburnsports.com on Friday that he was no longer committed to Auburn. Davis has reopened his recruitment and said he would no longer consider AU.
“I’m not going to Auburn anymore,” Davis told the Web site. “I’m going to look at other schools.”
He is now considering offers from Ole Miss, Tennessee and Florida State, among others.
Rivals.com rates Davis a five-star prospect and the No. 3 prep-school prospect in the country. He signed with AU last year out of Lynn Haven, Fla., but academics forced him to spend a year in prep school at Hargrave Military Academy in Virginia.
While Davis worked on improving his grades in 2007, Auburn struggled on offense, eventually forcing the resignation of offensive coordinator Al Borges. His replacement, Tony Franklin, began installing the spread offense.
Franklin’s addition has been a boon to Auburn’s recruiting efforts: The Tigers have commitments from three quarterbacks and five wide receivers. It’s proved persuasive to tailbacks: Two running backs are already committed to AU, and Seffner, Fla., standout Eric Smith could become the third today.
But the spread isn’t appealing to Davis, who made an official visit to AU in November, when Borges still ran the Tigers’ offense. Davis hasn’t yet met Franklin, who was hired in December.
“I wish I had taken my official visit after Franklin came in,” Davis said. “When I was there, he wasn’t, so I didn’t get to meet him. I like a hard-nosed running game. … I just don’t know if I really like that offense.
“That’s what it comes down to. That offense is more for quarterbacks and receivers in my eyes.”
Auburnsports.com reported Auburn coaches, including Franklin, hope to meet with Davis before Signing Day to change his mind.
“I’m checking out Ole Miss this weekend, Tennessee after that,” he said. “Auburn is coming to see me next week, so I’m not completely closing the door on them.”
