SEC MEDIA DAYS: 5 Things

07/22 at 11:39 PM

—This may very well be Vanderbilt interim coach Robbie Caldwell’s first and last SEC Media Days, but he certainly left an impression that will be felt for years to come. Sure, there are plenty of reporters that aren’t exactly versed in proper etiquette, but it takes something special to elicit the applause Caldwell received after his hilarious, entertaining and heartfelt 40 minutes on the podium. Numerous scribes who have covered the SEC longer than I’ve been alive said they’d never seen anything like it. Unfortunately, they probably won’t see Caldwell here again unless the Commodores do something special in 2010.

—It wouldn’t be fair to rip the SEC one day for the horrible, embarrassing Internet debacle without congratulating the league for fixing the problem Thursday. Maybe it was the afternoon golf outing, but reporters sure seemed to be working with much more efficiency Thursday than they were Wednesday. Note to SEC: the faster we work, the less of your food we’ll eat.

—When asked if he was concerned that his title as the league’s best quote was in danger after Caldwell’s performance, South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier dismissed the metaphorical crown with an answer that proved he never will be overthrown: “I don’t think I’ve won enough games lately to have any outlandish quotes,” Spurrier said. “If you win a bunch of games, it’s pretty easy to give all the answers up here.”

—There’s a major reason why this year’s Arkansas Team should not be compared to last year’s Ole Miss squad, which fell flat after bloated preseason expectations. Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino won’t under-utilize his biggest offensive weapon (Ryan Mallett) like Houston Nutt did with Dexter McCluster. If it worked, Petrino would have Mallett throw 80 passes per game.

—Georgia wide receiver A.J. Green’s vow of silence regarding the ongoing agent probe was as serious as it gets. Even though he admitted earlier in the day to ESPN that he’d never been to Miami in his life, Green no-commented the same exact question when he was in front of hundreds of reporters in the main ballroom. When asked if he was frustrated not to be able to comment, Green declined to comment.
