Swimming sets U.S. record

TUSCALOOSA — The Auburn swimming and diving team wasted no time getting thing started Wednesday in the opening day of the SEC Championships as the 800 freestyle relay team of Ava Ohlgren, Caitlin Geary Melissa Marik and Emily Kukors set a new American record.

After the first day of competition, Auburn’s men are in first place with 126 points, followed by Tennessee in second with 86. Auburn’s women are in sixth place with 74 points, but are only 15 points behind first-place Florida (89).

Auburn won the 800 free relay by more than six seconds with a time of 6:57.28, a mark that sets new Auburn, SEC, pool, U.S. Open and American records.

Softball rallies to get past South Alabama
MOBILE — Trailing by two runs in the top of the seventh with two outs, the Auburn softball team rallied for three runs to come away with a 4-3 victory over the South Alabama Jaguars on Wednesday night.

The Tigers improved to 6-0 with the victory, while the Jaguars fell to 3-5. Angel Bunner (2-0) earned the win after pitching 3.0 innings in relief of starter Anna Thompson.  Shannon Smith (0-1) took the loss for South Alabama.

Men’s golf tied for first in Hawaii
WAHIAWA, Hawaii — Led by Jay Moseley’s 6-under 66, the Auburn men’s golf team fired a 10-under 278 in the first round of the John Burns Intercollegiate at the par-72, 6,916-yard Leilehua Golf Course on Wednesday. The Tigers are tied for first with Arizona and San Diego State.

Moseley, who finished sixth in last year’s John Burns, is tied for first, with Arizona’s Tarquin Macmanus and San Diego State’s Johan Carlsson. Senior Jamie Bowen is tied for 18th with a 2-under 70.  Senior Steven Groover and junior Glenn Northcutt carded 1-under 71s and are tied for 30th. Junior Cole Moreland shot a 1-over 73 and is tied for 56th.

Men’s tennis team, players earn ITA rankings
The Auburn men’s tennis team was well-represented in the Feb. 20 release of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association national rankings, with the Tigers moving up to No. 36 along with four entries in the individual rankings.

In the individual rankings, two Auburn players found their way to the top 100 in singles. Alexey Tsyrenov is currently ranked No. 59 in the country. Freshman Tim Puetz, was ranked No. 81. The combo of Lukas Marsoun and Puetz was ranked No. 31 in doubles while the team of Tsyrenov and Terence Nugent (3-1) trails at No. 41.
